Joe Haines sprung a grand final surprise on pre meeting favourite Tai Woffinden to take the British Under 21 crown at Lakeside.
Haines lined up in the Grand Final alongside Grand Prix star and Wolves team mate Woffinden a well as Peterborough's defending under-21 champion Lewis Bridger.
As the tapes rose, Haines jetted away from the start and never looked back, leading his two ELite League rivals in his wake despite the efforts of Woffinden to pass.
It was the second time that Haines had defeated Woffinden and came after both they and Bridger had finished the meeting on fourteen points a piece. With only two places on offer in the grand final and nothing to separate them, the referee placed all three names into a ballot and Haines was left to contest the semi-final for a shot at the big prize.
He duly won that heat, earning his place in the big race alongside Rye House's Kyle Hughes. When ballot again dictated he had third choice of gate things look as though they had worked against him - but his lightning start and determined first corner saw him crowned a deserved winner on the night.
The home side had their number eight Jerran Hart in action and he rode well for his ten points, opening proceedings with an impressive win over 2009 Hammers Robert Mear.
