It's my age Mick !!! Well that's my excuse anyway....so there were actually twenty teams. Edinburgh changed to Coatbridge at some time didn't they ??? That much I do remember. And they were great times for everyone back in the sixties. We didn't have mobile phones, so there were less car accidents by arrogant people insisting on yapping on a mobile while trying to manouvre a car at high speed round a corner.....No computers, so we played football and other running about games, so there was no child obesity....Football was played by men, not overpaid cheating little snots....Drug problems were when a hospital ran out of pills during an outbreak of a disease, not what you see all around you nowadays....Programmes on the TV were designed to cheer you up, not make you suicidal like the bl00dy soaps do now.....AND SPEEDWAY WAS MORE ABOUT RIDER SKILL THAN 'MY ENGINES BETTER TUNED THAN YOUR ENGINE' !!!..........
HAPPY HAPPY DAYS WERE THE SIXTIES !!
Steady Nobby your begining to sound like our Cilla ! ........... |

Back to the original subject of the World Team Cup.....
My God let us pray....
That the final is not on a slick Ole Olsen specially prepared for the Danish team track like the one we saw tonight. And also let us hope and pray that Team GB think about set ups for a slick track right from the start because I feel sure in all honesty that no amount of praying to any higher being will stop Ole ****ing up the track like only he can !!! |

British League started in, I think, 1964....and the 'sixties' would have ended in 1969 and I'm not sure that Reading and Wembley came in until 1970 onwards....but I stand to be corrected. Someone will chastise me if I am wrong Judy.
Just checked up and Reading entered BL divison two in 1968, so you are technically correct even though we were talking British League main division, but Wembley didn't enter until 1970. |

Dream on.
I just remember what happened when RR took Arena into the Elite and the tremendous amount of help that was promised and received from the other promoters, OB. I would think that alone would make any PL promoter think twice about joining the EL.
When Arena joined the EL and THE top riders were in EL teams, I would have been against any move back to the PL. However things have changed and despite the writing being on the wall for some time, the EL is now a complete mess. It is such a mess that I doubt it is able to fixed without some very radical changes. Unfortunately, I cannot see the will amongst the collective EL promoters to do anything about it. Yes, there is a minority that is trying to improve things, but as any change will affect certain clubs adversely, the "progressives" will be shouted down.
IMO although it is not free from its own problems, the PL is a far better product than the EL at present. I think some of the reasons I like visiting Newport include generally more competitive racing and variety. The GP provides an opportunity to watch the skill of the top riders. The EL lacks all these things at present.
Anyway, good luck to the British team tomorrow night. |

I don't doubt that you did visit Bradford to watch speedway JAKZAY, but my post stated that I was brought up watching speedway in the era of the sixties British League that had 19 teams in it and Bradford were not in the British League of the sixties era. Bradford ODSAL were pre sixties and Bradford who came along after the sixties entered the League in the seventies or eighties as far as I can remember.
EDIT...I have found some info on the History of Bradford Speedway...
"Speedway has been in Bradford since 1945 and was a major force in the speedway world for much of its 52 year history. The club has had a number of club names. From 1945 until 1949 they were known as the Bradford Boomerangs. From 1950 to 1957 they were known as the Bradford Tudors but in 1960 changed the name to Bradford Panthers. Unfortunately the club folded in 1962. In 1970 the club was reformed and changed its name to Bradford Northern but then changed it again in 1974 to the Bradford Barons until 1976 when the club folded once more. However, after the shock announcement that the Speedway World Finals would be held at Odsal Stadium in 1985, a number of race meetings were arranged prior to the event. Over £1million was spent on the stadium including a brand new shale track. When an opportunity arrose offering the Halifax Dukes a new new home, the offer was too good to turn down. The move took place in 1986 and Bradford once more had its own speedway team, the Bradford Dukes. Bradford speedway then enjoyed its greatest period of success winning eight Championships and a World Title until the club's closure in 1997 when the club folded for the third and final time, and as Elite League Champions."
Leigh Adams rode for Arena Essex from 1993 to 1995. Leigh was born in 1971 (in Mildura, Australia as Sky Sports commentators love to remind us every week) so a far cry from the sixties mate. |

No need to mate. Wouldn't it be great to have an Elite League with the same number of teams in it as in those days. We can but dream I suppose. |

Much of the old Bradford track is still in place, though I am not sure how much is dirt and how much is shale.
PS: You are not likely to see a return to Odsal as the crown of two (1+2 or 3+4) bends is now a brick walled building. Recently they were talking about the banking at each end of the pitch created for the speedway track. This was during a recent Superleague match there. |
