Joonas started his Elite League career with the Eastbourne Eagles in 2001, returning a string of steady middle order scores. Initially joining as reserve, Joonas actually spent much of the 2001 season as a second string.
He was loaned out to Ipswich by the Eagles in 2002, a victim of the Elite League points limit. He returned to Arlington in 2003 in the main body of the team, starting with the fifth highest average in the Eastbourne line-up.
Ronnie Russell took the talented Finn on loan for the 2003 season in a 'Doubling-down' capacity, but his lost his services in 2004 when Kylmakorpi returned to Eastbourne.
An Elite League-winning member of the Coventry Bees team in 2005, Joonas delighted Hammers fans when it was announced he was returning in 2006.
After some fantastic early season form, Joonas suffered a collarbone injury at Arena-Essex in a home meeting against Wolverhampton in May and took time to return to full fitness.
New Promoter Stuart Douglas gave every Hammers fan the perfect New Year present when he announced that the popular Finn was returning in 2007, having purchased his contract from Eastbourne.
